R.I.P. myrtle beach bike week

i have been coming to myrtle for bike week so many years now, i really didnt pay attention to the media. in preparation for the trip a few weeks ago i started this blog and started hearing about the anti-biker attitude currently in place in myrtle beach. well...i am here, but not too many others are: about 20% of last year's crowd showed up and only 30% of the hotels are filled. no one enters the city of myrtle beach because of the drag pipe/helmet law combo. wtf? hmmm...interesting strategy, myrtle beach, in this economy: closing the door on 300,000 paying customers! whatever...we are still having fun, just elsewhere.

headed south

we are outta here! we will be riding in the sun- with helmets and without drag pipes-by noon today: righteous!

myrtle beach bike week or bust!

looking forward to seeing old friends and taking long rides in myrtle this year: we leave tomorrow! we are planning a ride down to charleston and savannah one day, but where else are we going? the myrtle beach flea market at the state park has 350 vendors in air-conditioned space and is open 9-6 daily. (great if it is stormy or super hot). friday the 15th at 1:00 there is the iraqi freedom charity ride beginning at the red barn tavern. friday or saturday we may ride north to new bern, north carolina where the carolina harley-davidson dealers association has relocated their spring rally from myrtle beach due to all the controversy. new bern is about 30 miles from myrtle. maybe we will cruise through the croatan national forest on the way back to our motel.

cruisin' the coast 2009

apparently bike week, (or "cruisin' the coast" rally) was almost cancelled in myrtle beach this year! the city of myrtle beach doesnt like bikers and inacted a number of laws to keep them in check. in addition to the helmet law. they are also having police checkpoints for the first time ever: here is a list of the checkpoint times and locations.

myrtle beach helmet law

so, the city of myrtle beach has passed a helmet law that the boys in blue are ready to enforce. business owners in the enclave are fighting the city over their enforcement practices: the suit has gone all the way to the south carolina supreme court! what is your opinion? (photo courtesy of diesel bear: i have a feeling he is looking forward to seeing everybody!)

inclement weather

as thunderstorms bear down on the mid-atlantic with some of us under tornado watches all night, i am reminded how volatile the weather in may is: not a year at myrtle beach has passed without inclement weather of some type! so, i ordered a new rainsuit. i also got the radar in motion app for my iphone.
